– a Greating From Outer Space
Söderfjärden is known by geologists to be the site of a meteorite collission with the earth something like 550 million years ago. This remarcable circular depression os one of Finland's most interesting geological features. The area is surrounded by a stony rim, particularly prominent on the north side.
An extensive programme of drainage of the marshes was begun in the 1920's. This was the most ambitious in the Nordic countries and gave 1.400 ha first class new arable land. Söderfjärden has always been an important resting place for migrating birds.
